Why plants need water, light and soil? - Research - Year 2

As part of a Year 2 curriculum, students are encouraged to explore the fundamental needs of plants and trees through a structured scientific investigation. The process is divided into three stages: Planning, Doing, and Evaluative. In the Planning stage, students are prompted to define the scope of their inquiry clearly, considering what they already know about plant growth requirements. They must gather necessary resources and collaborate with their group, consisting of no more than four members, to refine their ideas and agree on the best approach for the investigation. Critical thinking is encouraged to ensure that the group remains open to new ideas and ready to adjust their plans as needed.

During the Doing stage, students actively engage in the investigation, working together to discover why plants need water, light, and soil. This stage emphasizes the importance of teamwork and the willingness to adapt ideas based on the investigation's findings. Students learn to evaluate their progress and the effectiveness of their methods. In the Evaluative stage, reflection is key. Students assess what worked well, what could be improved, and what lessons they can carry forward into future scientific inquiries. They consider the value of discussion and collaboration in reaching well-thought-out conclusions. This investigation not only teaches students about the essentials of plant growth but also fosters skills in scientific inquiry, cooperation, and self-evaluation.
