Woodland Birds - Plants - Year 1
Science Resource Description
In a Year 1 exploration of woodland birds, children are encouraged to discover and learn about the avian inhabitants of forested areas. The activity involves researching four birds that are commonly found in woods and trees, delving into their names, dietary habits, nesting preferences, and the characteristics of the eggs they lay. To assist with this, the children are directed to use a provided resource, Appendix 5, which contains detailed information to enhance their understanding of these feathered creatures.
The learning experience is made interactive and engaging through the use of visual aids, with pictures of various birds that make their homes in woodlands and trees. Students are tasked with identifying the birds in these images as a starting point for their research. Additionally, the lesson connects the study of birds with botany by asking the children to consider the different parts of plants and how they relate to the birds they are studying. This multifaceted approach not only helps the young learners to recognize and name several bird species but also encourages them to think about the interdependence between flora and fauna in woodland ecosystems.
