Cops and Robbers - What do you know about birds? - Year 1
Science Resource Description
In an engaging activity designed for Year 1 pupils, 'Cops and Robbers' takes a playful approach to learning about birds. Initially, children are given a two-minute timeframe to jot down everything they can recall about birds on their own. This phase encourages them to dig into their memories and write down any facts or information they associate with birds, fostering independent recall and reinforcing their existing knowledge.
Following this, the 'robbers' element of the game comes into play, where pupils have 60 seconds to 'steal' ideas from their peers. They are allowed to view up to three other children's answers, selecting interesting or new pieces of information to add to their own list, which they write on the right side of their table. This dynamic part of the activity not only makes learning fun but also promotes sharing knowledge and learning from one another. Each plausible statement they write down is worth two points, incentivising children to think critically about the information they choose to 'steal'. The entire activity is designed to last 15 minutes, making it a swift and stimulating educational exercise. The game not only tests their knowledge of birds but also subtly introduces them to the different parts of plants, as they explore the relationship between flora and avian life.
