Why are certain materials suitable for many different uses? - Teacher notes
Science Resource Description
This educational unit is designed to encourage children to explore and understand the versatility of common materials in their environment. The unit begins with an observation exercise, prompting children to investigate the various applications of five specific materials: wood, glass, plastic, brick, and metal. To initiate the learning journey, children are directed to a resource on BBC Bitesize that provides an overview of everyday materials, setting the context for the unit.
The first task focuses on wood, where children are asked to identify and document five instances of wood usage in the natural world. This involves noting the location and capturing a photograph of the wood in its natural setting. This hands-on approach not only helps children to recognise the prevalence of wood in their surroundings but also to consider its properties and why it might be chosen for different purposes. Following this, the children extend their exploration to the other materials listed—glass, plastic, brick, and metal—considering each in turn. Through this investigative process, students are encouraged to think critically about the practicality and suitability of these materials for a multitude of uses in everyday life.
