What are the birds in our locality called? - Presentation
Science Resource Description
The educational material from Focus Education aims to teach pupils about the common birds found in their immediate surroundings. The unit begins by introducing the concept of animal classification and then narrows the focus to avian species. Initially, students are encouraged to identify and classify woodland birds, using a provided Appendix 6 for recording their findings. This includes researching the birds' names, diets, nesting habits, and the characteristics of their eggs. Visual aids in the form of pictures are used to stimulate the identification process.
Extending beyond woodland birds, the children are tasked with observing and learning about four bird species commonly seen around their school grounds. This information is to be documented in Appendix 7, which prompts students to note down details about the birds' food preferences, types of nests, and eggs. Furthermore, the unit engages students in a practical scientific activity where they work collaboratively in groups to devise strategies for attracting birds to their school. This involves understanding bird diets, creating bird feeders like fat balls, and learning about gardeners' techniques to lure birds. The process and outcomes of their efforts are to be recorded in Appendix 8, with sections dedicated to planning, implementation, evaluation, and visual documentation of their projects.
