Light is a form of radiation that enables visibility, emanating from various sources such as the Sun, fires, and electrical devices. For instance, the intense light from the Sun can be so overpowering that it may cause temporary blindness. A light source is the origin from which light is emitted; the Sun serves as the primary light source on our planet, and for experimental purposes, a torch might be utilized as a light source in a controlled setting.

Conversely, darkness is the state that prevails when light is absent, which can create a silence in a forest where only the occasional owl's hoot is heard. Transparency is a characteristic of materials that permit the complete passage of light, such as exceptionally clear and calm water which allows one to observe fish swimming over coral. Translucent materials, on the other hand, only let some light pass through them, providing a level of privacy, as is the case with the glass in an office. Opaque objects are completely impervious to light, blocking it entirely and casting the darkest of shadows, making them ideal for crafting sundials that require non-transparent materials.

The term 'shiny' refers to objects that reflect light effectively, such as a disco ball that dazzles with its reflective surface. In contrast, materials described as 'matt' have a dull finish and do not reflect light well, which is why matt paint is often chosen for its non-reflective quality in interior design. Shadows are areas of darkness formed when an object obstructs the path of light from a light source, leading to elongated silhouettes during the low Sun. The process of light bouncing off a material is known as reflection, which can sometimes result in a glare from shiny surfaces that hampers visibility.
