Living Things and their Habitat - Assessment
Science Resource Description
In the Year Two Summative Assessment for the topic of Living Things and their Habitats, students are tested on their understanding of various biological concepts through a series of engaging activities. The assessment starts with a sorting task where children draw lines to categorise items correctly, testing their ability to distinguish between different elements of natural habitats. They then move on to a section where they read statements and determine whether they apply to living or non-living objects, fostering critical thinking about the characteristics of life such as reproduction, the need for food, and movement.
Further questions delve into the adaptability of animals, such as the Arctic fox and Arctic hare, which change their coat colours according to the seasons. Students match the seasons to the appropriate coat colours, demonstrating their knowledge of animal adaptations. They are also asked to explain why these animals change their coat colours, requiring a short written response. The assessment includes a matching activity where students connect animals to their respective habitats, and another task where they identify the habitats of given animals. To test their understanding of ecological relationships, students are asked to create a food chain from a set of organisms, and then think critically about which additional animal could be placed at the end of this food chain. The assessment is designed to evaluate the students' comprehension of key concepts related to living organisms and their environments.
