Hygiene - Lesson Plan
Science Resource Description
In a Year Two biology lesson focused on hygiene, students are introduced to the science of cleanliness and its importance to human health. The lesson adheres to the National Curriculum, teaching children the significance of exercise, balanced diet, and hygiene. Through engaging activities, pupils explore the microscopic world of germs, such as bacteria and viruses, and learn practical ways to maintain hygiene. They are encouraged to think critically about common misconceptions, like the five-second rule for dropped food, and are taught the correct information, such as the immediate transfer of bacteria upon contact with the floor. The lesson plan also includes a scientific explanation of how germs are spread through sneezing and skin contact, and the effectiveness of handwashing in preventing infections. Health and safety considerations are emphasized, ensuring that pupils wash their hands after the activities and are aware of slip hazards from spills.
Cross-curricular links are made with English, Art, and ICT, as pupils are tasked with creating public service information and posters about hygiene, as well as researching bacteria and viruses. The lesson plan is sensitive to the potential seriousness of bacterial and viral infections, and it provides a comprehensive set of activities to illustrate the spread and prevention of germs. These activities include visual demonstrations using glitter to represent germs on skin and pepper in water to simulate the action of soap on germs. Not only does the lesson plan provide a hands-on learning experience, but it also prompts discussions and questions that encourage students to reflect on their own hygiene practices. By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to name organisms that cause illness, suggest hygienic practices, and explain the importance of cleanliness for health.
