The concept of MRS GREN encompasses the seven essential characteristics that define living organisms. According to this mnemonic, for an entity to be considered alive, it must exhibit all seven traits. The first characteristic is movement, which might not always be visible to the naked eye. Plants, for example, demonstrate movement by orienting their leaves towards sunlight, despite seeming stationary.

Respiration is another vital process, where living beings convert glucose into the energy necessary for survival. Animals achieve this by inhaling oxygen. Sensitivity refers to the ability of organisms to perceive and respond to changes in their environment, such as seeking shade when it's too hot. Growth is a continuous process where organisms increase in size and regenerate cells using energy from respiration. Reproduction is the biological mechanism through which living things produce offspring, either through sexual means involving two parents or asexual means involving just one. Excretion is the process by which organisms eliminate waste to prevent toxicity. Lastly, nutrition is the intake of nutrients essential for life, with animals consuming food and plants synthesizing their own sustenance.
