What does the Year 1 scheme cover?

Focus Education prioritises equipping teachers with the essential tools to deliver exceptional Geography lessons, ensuring remarkable outcomes for pupils. This approach not only cultivates an understanding of where places are and how landscapes are formed, but also fosters a lasting appreciation and deep understanding of how the earth’s physical features and atmosphere can be shaped and impacted by human activity.

Hot and Cold

In this unit, utilise maps and globes to investigate both hot and cold regions worldwide. Reflect on the unique challenges of living in Antarctica and compare it to our own experiences. Explore the difficulties faced by people residing near the Equator and examine their way of life. Take a closer look at the animals in these diverse environments and study their adaptations, including how they stay warm or cool in their surroundings.

Key questions answered:

  • How can you use maps and the globe to locate the Equator, the North Pole and the South Pole?
  • How have people adapted to live in a very cold climate?
  • How have people adapted to live in a very hot climate?
  • Which animals will we find living naturally in very hot or very cold regions?

My Local Area

Start by examining the globe and locating the UK in this unit, identifying the surrounding seas and delving into nearby villages and towns. Capture photographs of places in your immediate area and integrate them onto the local street map. Distinguish between road signs designed for motorists and those intended for pedestrians and extend your exploration to your local city, pinpointing the most intriguing buildings and providing explanations about their significance.

Key questions answered:

  • How do we use maps to locate the four countries of the UK, their capital cities and the main seas that surround the UK?
  • What is an address and postcode and why are they important?
  • How do we use a local map to find the streets around the school?
  • What do the road signs tell us?
  • What do I know about the nearest town or city to where I live?

Recycling

What can we do to reduce our use of plastic? In this unit, focus on raising awareness about the significant amount of waste generated each year and the environmental issues it poses, recognising the impact of this waste on our surroundings. Take proactive steps by making personal pledges to be more environmentally friendly and actively contribute to improving the world around us. By understanding the challenges posed by excessive plastic use, we can collectively play a role in creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment.

Key questions answered:

  • Where does all our rubbish go?
  • What do we mean by recycling?
  • Why is plastic environmentally unfriendly?
  • How can we be more environmentally friendly?
