What does the Year 6 scheme cover?

PZAZ provides Year 6 teachers with all of the essential tools to deliver outstanding Science lessons, ensuring they have all of the resources necessary to plan and achieve positive outcomes for their pupils. With each lesson designed to take place over two weeks, scientific knowledge builds gradually over time to become firmly embedded. This approach not only fosters a deep appreciation for exploring the world around them but also gives pupils a lasting enthusiasm for Science learning that stays with them beyond their primary education.

Animals, including Humans

Explore the intricacies of your circulatory system in this unit, examining the chambers of your heart and understanding the basic functions of veins and arteries. Measure your heart rate and pulse both before and after exercise, recognising the vital role of oxygen delivery to muscles through the bloodstream. Explore the realms of diet and food groups, investigating the consequences of overeating, and distinguish between drugs and medicines. Learn how nutrients move into all parts of the body by osmosis and the role our kidneys have.

Electricity

Link the way components work to the number of cells in the circuit and explain how a switch works in this unit. Engage in hands-on learning by constructing your own circuit, recognising that the flow of electricity necessitates wires or components, and identifying this flow as an electrical current. Explore the significance of voltage and its effects on devices such as buzzers within the circuit.

Light

Explore how light travels during this unit. Look at reflectors and identify when reflection occurs, considering whether objects can be both luminous and non-luminous. Learn how light always travels in straight lines and explore what happens to a shadow when you shine light at an angle.

Living Things and Their Habitats

Explore the differences and similarities between microorganisms and learn about bacteria, viruses, protozoa, algae and fungi during this unit. Find out how most of the cells in your body have DNA inside of them and how scientists use this information to explore the relationship between different living things.

Evolution and Inheritance

Consider how adaptions that benefit living things can lead to evolution across this unit. Think about why a giraffe has a long neck or why an owl is camouflaged. Learn how polar bears stay warm and why camels have wide feet. Delve into human evolution and mutations, and how fossils can be used as a record of the changes that have taken place.
