In the Max Maths programme for Year 2, children are encouraged to learn addition within 100 without regrouping. A key strategy taught is breaking up numbers into tens and ones to simplify the addition process. For example, when adding 25 and 42, students are shown how to separate the numbers into tens and ones: 25 becomes 20 (2 tens) and 5 (5 ones), and 42 becomes 40 (4 tens) and 2 (2 ones). This method makes it easier for young learners to understand the value of each digit and to add numbers systematically.

After breaking up the numbers, students proceed to add the ones first. In our example, 5 ones plus 2 ones equal 7 ones. Next, they add the tens: 2 tens plus 4 tens result in 6 tens. The final step is to combine the sums of the ones and tens to find the total. So, 25 plus 42 is broken down to 20 plus 40 (the tens) and 5 plus 2 (the ones), which then simplifies to 60 (from the tens) plus 7 (from the ones), giving a final result of 67. Through this method, children can visually see that there are 67 blocks altogether, enhancing their understanding of addition within 100.
