Knowledge Progression

The Whole School Knowledge Progression outlines the developmental understanding of various scientific concepts as students advance through their educational journey from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6. In the area of 'Animals including humans', children begin by recognizing different body parts and preferences of animals, and the curriculum evolves to include understanding the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, and hygiene. By Year 6, they delve into the complexities of the human circulatory system and the impact of lifestyle choices on bodily functions.

Similarly, in 'Everyday Materials', young learners start by identifying objects made from different materials and progress to understanding the properties of materials and their suitability for specific uses. By Year 6, students are expected to explain reversible and irreversible changes and the properties of materials, including their conductivity and solubility. Across other scientific areas such as 'Light', 'Magnets', 'Electricity', and 'Plants', the progression follows a similar pattern, starting with basic identifications and leading to a deeper understanding of the principles and concepts governing these topics. The curriculum also covers 'Living things and their habitats', 'Rocks', 'Forces', 'Sound', 'States of matter', 'Earth and Space', 'Evolution and inheritance', and includes learning about famous scientists whose work has significantly contributed to our understanding of the world.
