Protecting Oceans Lesson Presentation
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Resource Description
The "Protecting Oceans" lesson presentation is an interactive and educational journey for Primary 5-7 students, focusing on the importance of oceans and the impact of human actions on these vast bodies of water. The lesson begins with a pair activity where students discuss what can be found in the oceans, encouraging them to think about the diversity of marine life and habitats. As the lesson progresses, it delves deeper into the reasons why oceans are crucial, not only as a home to a myriad of plants and animals but also for their role in producing oxygen and supporting human activities like travel and recreation.
The presentation takes a critical turn as it prompts students to consider whether enough is being done to protect our oceans. Through a series of true or false questions, children learn about the effects of overfishing, pollution, and international treaties like The High Seas Treaty aimed at ocean conservation. Students are then invited to participate in a "vote with your feet" activity, evaluating the potential impact of various conservation measures, such as reducing boat traffic and fishing, cleaning up ocean litter, and making small changes in daily life. The lesson concludes with a discussion on the current efforts to address oceanic issues and a final thought exercise, where students express their opinions on whether humans should do more to safeguard our oceans, followed by a class vote to encapsulate their collective viewpoint.
