Ukrainian refugee scheme Lesson Plan
English Resource Description
In this comprehensive lesson plan, designed for Key Stage 2 students, the objective is to explore the concept of a refugee and the assistance they may require. The lesson aims to deepen understanding of the term 'refugee' and to stimulate a discussion on the fairness and inclusivity of the Homes for Ukraine programme. The lesson begins with a feedback session where students review the results and feedback from the previous week's topic. This is followed by a starter activity where small groups use thumbs up or down to indicate whether statements about refugees are true or false.
As the lesson progresses, the whole class delves into why the topic of refugees is relevant, with particular reference to the UK's Homes for Ukraine scheme. Pairs of students then list the top five things they need to feel safe, happy, and at home, comparing their lists with those of refugees and considering what refugees may lack. The lesson continues with a quiz in small groups to learn about the Homes for Ukraine scheme and to weigh its advantages and disadvantages. The session concludes with individual reflection and a whole-class discussion on whether the scheme sufficiently supports Ukrainian refugees and what more could be done for other refugees. This includes watching a short clip about a Ukrainian refugee's experience in Poland. Finally, students engage in a voting activity to express their opinions on whether the Homes for Ukraine programme should be extended to help more refugees, and they are informed about the Student Voice Awards, providing a platform for their voices to be heard.
