Modern Slavery Lesson Plan
English Resource Description
This lesson plan is designed to educate Key Stage 2 students about the complex issue of modern slavery and the importance of public awareness in combating it. The lesson begins with an optional review of the previous week's topic on gaming, followed by a 'True or False' starter activity where pupils use thumbs up or down to express their opinions on various statements, encouraging them to engage critically with the subject matter. The introduction sets the scene for the week's learning journey, highlighting the relevance of the topic in relation to upcoming events such as Anti-Slavery Day and challenges faced by the UK Modern Slavery Helpline.
Through a series of thought-provoking activities, students explore the concept of freedom by comparing the lives of a free bird and a caged one, and they discuss signs of enslavement in a clip from Cinderella. The lesson progresses to more direct discussions on modern slavery, where pupils examine scenarios and identify potential warning signs. A key segment of the lesson involves an optical illusion activity, 'Hidden in Plain Sight', which prompts students to look for indicators that someone may be a victim of slavery through storytelling. The lesson culminates in an activity where students learn what actions to take upon recognizing signs of slavery and create a leaflet to raise awareness. Alongside the main content, there are additional resources for pupils with special educational needs or those eligible for pupil premium, as well as stretch and challenge tasks for those who require further engagement. The 'Career Launchpad' section provides insights into careers related to the topic, including participating in the Walk for Freedom and working for a modern slavery charity.
