Week 34, lesson 1-5 Unit 4 Assessment Week - Phonics Phase 5, unit 4 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
During Week 34, lessons 1-5, Year 1 students will engage in an assessment week for Unit 4 of their Phonics Phase 5 learning. The objective of this week is to review and consolidate the phonetic knowledge and skills acquired throughout the unit. Each day of the week, the lesson begins with an exciting review game such as Quickdash, Quickwrite Words, Quickdash Words, Word Breaker, or HFW Race. These games are designed to refresh students' memories and prepare them for the assessment activities ahead.
The main part of the lesson involves practical application of their phonics skills. The class is divided into groups, and students rotate through various activity tables. At Table 1, children connect words to the corresponding -ed sound using pictophones. Table 2 focuses on adjective endings, where children add -er and -est to base adjectives. Table 3 is dedicated to verb endings, with students filling in -s, -ed, and -ing as appropriate. Noun endings are the focus at Table 4, with children working on -s and -ies endings. At Table 5, children let their imaginations flow by writing a short story based on a provided image. To ensure continuous learning, any child who finishes early is encouraged to engage in quiet, independent activities such as free reading, journal writing, crafting miniature storybooks, or drawing.
The assessment component of the lesson involves one-on-one time with the teacher, where individual students complete assessment sheets for Phase 5 Unit 4. This personalised approach allows the teacher to gauge each child's understanding and mastery of the phonics concepts taught in the unit.
