Week 32, lesson 5 New High Frequency Words (thought,through,though,because,shoe) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 4 - Lesson plan

In the fifth lesson of Week 32, students in Phase 5, Unit 4 of their phonics programme will be introduced to four new high-frequency words (HFWs): "thought," "through," "though," "because," and "shoe." The objective for the day is clear: to familiarise students with these commonly used words. The lesson begins with a revisiting exercise where students engage with a pictophone to identify phonemes and recall various graphemes associated with different sounds, such as , for "owl," and , for "oyster."

The teaching segment of the lesson involves writing the new words on the board and encouraging the children to come up with sentences that include these words, thus helping them understand their usage in context. This is followed by a fun activity where the grapheme is underlined in "thought," "through," and "though," and children are asked to observe how it sounds different in each word, highlighting the complexity of the English language. For practice, the "High Frequency Word Jump" game is introduced, where children are shown flashcards of the new words and must jump up when they see the word they are looking out for. To apply their learning, children are given the opportunity to write the words on mini whiteboards and share with the class, reinforcing their understanding and ability to use the new HFWs in writing.
