Week 32, lesson 3 Plural Endings Review - Phonics Phase 5, unit 4 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the third lesson of Week 32, students revisit and reinforce their understanding of plural endings in Phonics Phase 5, Unit 4. The objective of the lesson is clear: to review how words are transformed into their plural forms with the addition of -s, -es, and -ies endings. The lesson begins with a Grapheme Match activity, where a pictophone is displayed, and children are encouraged to vocalise its phoneme and suggest various graphemes that represent the same sound, with examples including 'earth', 'aircraft', and 'ox'.
Following the initial activity, the lesson moves on to a Word Sort exercise. The teacher writes the three plural endings at the top of the board and then presents a singular word. A student is then asked to determine the correct plural ending for the word. Once decided, the teacher writes the plural form under the appropriate ending and engages the class in sound-talking the word. Some of the words used in this activity include 'drain', 'bush', 'pool', 'baby', and 'fox'. To apply their learning, children work in groups with cut-out squares from the day's resources, piecing together full phrases that incorporate the plural words they have learned about. This hands-on activity helps to solidify their understanding of pluralisation in English.
