Week 31, lesson 1-5 Consonants Review Week and End of Unit Assessment - Phonics Phase 5, unit 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The final week of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 3 is dedicated to reviewing consonants and assessing the children's understanding of what they have learned. The objective of the week is clear: "Today we will be reviewing all we have learnt together!" Each day starts with engaging review games such as Quickdash, Quickwrite Words, Quickdash Words, Word Breaker, and HFW Race, designed to refresh the children's memory and reinforce their phonics skills.
During the application phase, children are divided into groups and rotate through various activities. At Table 1, pairs work on the Sound Spotter activity, reading a paragraph and underlining the /w/ phoneme, then listing the graphemes representing it. At Table 2, Word Sort has pairs decoding words and linking them to their corresponding phoneme or pictophone. Sound Gangplank at Table 3 requires children to decode words and match them to the correct picture. Table 4's Write the Story activity has children composing sentences based on an illustration, while at Table 5, Rhyme Match involves cutting out words and finding rhyming pairs. For those who finish early, an extension task challenges them to write a story using a set of words provided by the teacher, incorporating high-frequency words and new grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs). The week concludes with individual assessments, where children complete the end-of-unit test to demonstrate their phonics knowledge.
