Week 23, lesson 5 New High Frequency Words (their, your, people, could, put) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of Week 23, students are introduced to new high-frequency words (HFWs) as part of their phonics education. The objective of the lesson is clear: to familiarise the students with the words "their," "people," "your," "put," and "could." This lesson is part of Phase 5, Unit 3 of the All Aboard Phonics programme and is designed to expand the students' vocabulary and improve their reading fluency.
The lesson begins with a 'Quickwrite Words' activity where students practice writing words that contain graphemes they have previously found challenging. This is followed by writing the new HFWs on the board and engaging the children in creating sentences using these words. To make learning more interactive and fun, the teacher can involve the children in games where they take turns or work in pairs to call out the words. The 'High Frequency Word Jump' is another engaging activity where children must jump up when they recognise the word they are looking out for, as the teacher displays flashcards. Finally, the lesson concludes with a mini whiteboard exercise where children write the new words and, if time allows, compose phrases including these words, thus reinforcing their understanding and ability to use the new vocabulary in context.
