Week 22, lesson 5 New High Frequency Words (any, friend, laugh, today, want) - Phonics Phase , unit 3- Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In this engaging phonics lesson aimed at enhancing vocabulary, Year 1 students are introduced to new high-frequency words (HFWs) which include 'any', 'friend', 'laugh', 'today', and 'want'. The objective is clear: to familiarise the children with these common words that they will encounter regularly in their reading and writing. The lesson begins with a quickwrite activity where the teacher calls out words that require additional practice and the children write them on their whiteboards, displaying their work for immediate feedback.
During the teaching phase, the new HFWs are written on the board, and the children are encouraged to construct sentences using these words, enhancing their understanding of context and usage. The lesson includes a fun 'HFW Treasure Hunt', where children search for flashcards hidden around the classroom, distinguishing real words from nonsense words and recording their findings. If time allows, they can challenge themselves further by creating sentences with as many HFWs as possible. The lesson concludes with a mini whiteboard activity where children write down the words of the day and, if time permits, phrases dictated by the teacher, reinforcing their learning and ensuring they can apply the new vocabulary in context.
