In the fifth lesson of Week 21, the focus is on introducing and practising new high-frequency words (HFWs) within the context of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 3. The words for this session are 'now', 'came', 'oh', 'about', and 'got'. The objective of the lesson is to familiarise the students with these words, understanding their use in sentences and recognising them quickly. The lesson starts with a 'Quickwrite Words' activity where the teacher selects words from the week's lesson plans that the children need more practice with. The children write these words on their whiteboards and then display their answers for the class to see.

During the 'Teach' phase of the lesson, the teacher writes the new HFWs on the board and involves the children in creating sentences with these words, encouraging them to actively participate in calling out and repeating the words. This can be made more engaging by turning it into a game where pairs of children are called upon to provide answers. Following this, the 'Practise' activity, 'High Frequency Word Jump', involves a fun physical element where children jump up when they spot the word they're looking out for among shuffled flashcards. To consolidate learning, the 'Apply' stage has the children use mini whiteboards to write down the HFWs as they are dictated by the teacher, and if time allows, they also write down phrases incorporating today's words, such as 'He got cross when rain came' or 'It's about time now to go.'
