In the fourth lesson of Week 18, students will engage with new high-frequency words (HFWs) as part of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 3. The objective of this lesson is to review and reinforce the words 'see', 'word', 'very', 'look', and 'don't'. The lesson begins with a 'Word Breaker' activity where the teacher selects one of the HFWs, pronounces it to the class, and then invites the children to break it down into its individual sounds before saying the word in unison again. This exercise is repeated with a few more words to ensure the students become comfortable with the sounds and pronunciation.

Following the initial activity, the teacher writes the HFWs on the board and encourages the students to come up with sentences that incorporate these words. To make the lesson more interactive, students can be paired up and take turns to call out the words in a fun game format. The class then moves on to a 'HFW Treasure Hunt', where children search for flashcards hidden around the room, each card containing a high-frequency word or a nonsense word. Students are tasked with identifying and recording the real words on their treasure lists, ignoring the nonsense ones. If there's additional time, the children can also create sentences using as many HFWs as they can. The lesson concludes with mini whiteboard work, where the students write down the HFWs and, if time allows, some phrases dictated by the teacher, such as "I see very long words. Don't look at the sun!"
