Phase 5 Unit 2 Teacher Assessment Sheet - Phonics Phase 5, unit 2 - Resource
English Resource Description
The Phase 5 Unit 2 Teacher Assessment Sheet is a resource designed to evaluate a pupil's reading ability within a specific phonics phase. The assessment starts with a reading section where the pupil is instructed to read aloud a list of words, one row at a time. The teacher is to mark 'yes' or 'no' depending on whether the pupil can read each word correctly and is advised to conclude the activity after five minutes. It is important for the teacher to encourage the children to decode the words and to prompt them to move on if they struggle with any particular word. This section includes a variety of words, ranging from simple to more complex ones, to gauge the child's reading fluency and decoding skills.
Following the reading section, the assessment continues with High Frequency Words, where the pupil is asked to read common words that appear frequently in text. The teacher should assist the pupil if they are having difficulty, but still mark 'no' in such cases, and the activity is timed at 60 seconds. Next, the pupil is presented with Nonsense Words, which are made-up words used to test the child's phonetic decoding ability. Similar to the previous sections, the teacher should offer help if needed, mark accordingly, and limit the activity to five minutes. Lastly, an Eye Tracking section is included to determine if the pupil has any difficulties reading different text sizes. The teacher observes whether the pupil reads smaller text as well as larger text and marks 'yes' or 'no'. If issues are identified, the teacher is directed to begin a ten-day eye tracking exercise routine as detailed in the accompanying All Aboard Phonics Plus manual.
