In the phonics lesson planned for Week 15, Day 4, the objective is to review the graphemes , , , and , along with some previously learned ones. The session begins with a 'Quickdash Words' activity, where the teacher selects words featuring these graphemes for practice. These words are written on the board, complete with sound buttons and bars to assist in phoneme-by-phoneme decoding with the whole class.
The teaching segment involves writing the day's graphemes on one side of the board and attaching corresponding pictophones on the other side, such as Owl for and Unicorn for . Children are then invited to draw lines connecting each grapheme to its phonemes, reinforcing their understanding of the sounds. In the 'Countdown' practice activity, children line up and either choose a word to decode from the board or have one selected for them at random. They earn points for each correctly read word, with the total tallied at the end. The 'Apply' phase of the lesson includes a 'Caption Match' where children read a phrase and match it to a picture, encouraging them to apply their phonics knowledge to reading in context. The lesson is supported by two bonus revision worksheets for further reinforcement.
