English Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of Week 12, part of the Phonics Phase 5, Unit 2 curriculum, students are set to revisit and consolidate their understanding of the week's graphemes, as well as some previously learned ones. The objective is clearly stated at the outset, with the aim to review the graphemes , , and . The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash Words' activity, where the teacher selects words from past lessons that include the target graphemes and phonemes. These words are written on the board with sound buttons and bars, and the class works together to decode them, focusing on each phoneme in turn.
Moving on to the 'Teach' phase, the teacher writes the graphemes on one side of the board and places pictophones (visual aids representing sounds) on the other side. These include Oon, Ook for , Eagle, Ape for , and Goat, Jellyfish for . Students are then encouraged to draw lines connecting each grapheme to its corresponding phonemes. In the 'Practise' activity, the teacher engages the class in a 'Word Match' game, where words are displayed and the children use Yes/No flashcards to indicate whether the spoken word matches the written one. For example, the teacher may write 'school' and ask if it is 'stool', prompting the children to respond. Finally, the 'Apply' stage involves a 'Word Sort - Pairs' task, where children work together using an attached resource to decode words and associate them with the correct phoneme or pictophone, reinforcing their phonics knowledge.
