English Resource Description
In Week 12, Day 3 of the phonics curriculum, the lesson plan focuses on the digraph and the different sounds it can represent. The objective of the day is to review the phonemes that are commonly associated with the digraph. The lesson begins with a 'Quickwrite' activity, where children are prompted to write down the grapheme corresponding to a phoneme said aloud by the teacher. This activity is repeated with several phonemes to ensure that the students are engaged and ready to learn.
The teaching phase involves writing the digraph prominently on the board and asking the children to identify the phonemes it can signify. The teacher introduces visual aids, referred to as pictophones, such as Oon and Ook, and uses example words like "took" and "moon" to illustrate the short and long /oo/ sounds. During the practice part of the lesson, a 'Word Sort' exercise is conducted where words are decoded by the children and then categorised under the correct pictophone on the board. Words for this activity include "look," "shook," "book," "good," "cookie," "zoo," "soon," "spoon," "shoot," "mood," "gloom," and "seafood." Finally, the lesson concludes with an application activity where children use mini whiteboards to write words or sentences dictated by the teacher, such as "Eat a cookie and read a book" or "Look at the moon," along with individual words like "broom," "took," and "bloom."
