English Resource Description
In the second day of Week 12's phonics lessons, the focus is on reviewing the graphemes , , and , which were introduced in the current and previous weeks. The objective of the day is clear: to revisit and reinforce the understanding of these graphemes. The session starts with a 'Tricky Word Race' where children are encouraged to quickly read through a selection of challenging words, first individually and then as a competitive team activity, to enhance their recognition and pronunciation skills.
The teaching segment of the lesson involves writing the graphemes on the board and associating them with visual aids called pictophones, such as an Igloo for , and an Ox for . Children are invited to actively participate by drawing lines between the graphemes and their corresponding phonemes, reinforcing the connection between the two. The practice part of the lesson, 'Word Mood', is an engaging activity where children read words and phrases containing the graphemes in various emotional tones, adding a fun and dynamic aspect to the learning process. Finally, the 'Grapheme Spotter' exercise has the children working in pairs to identify and underline the grapheme in a paragraph, saying out loud the phoneme it represents, thus applying their knowledge in a practical context.
