Week 10, lesson 5 High Frequency Words (at,his,but,that,with) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 2 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of Week 10, the focus is on reinforcing the understanding of high-frequency words (HFW) within Phonics Phase 5, Unit 2. The objective of this lesson is to review five specific high-frequency words: 'at', 'his', 'but', 'that', and 'with'. These words are critical for young learners as they are commonly found in texts and are essential for developing reading fluency.
The lesson begins with a 'Word Breaker' activity, where the teacher selects one of the HFW and pronounces it to the class. Students are then encouraged to break the word down into its constituent phonemes before saying the whole word together again. This exercise is repeated with more words to reinforce phonemic awareness. Following this, the words are written on the board, and the class collaborates to decode them and construct sentences using each word. To make the learning process more engaging, a game is introduced where pairs of students take turns to call out the words. The practice continues with a 'HFW Treasure Hunt', where children search for flashcards with HFW and nonsense words hidden around the classroom, recording only the real words on their treasure lists. The lesson concludes with 'Mini Whiteboard Work', where children write the words and phrases dictated by the teacher, such as "That dog is his pet" and "At home, the dog plays with him", on their whiteboards and display their work for immediate feedback.
