English Resource Description
In the first lesson of Week 10, the focus is on the digraph and its associated phonemes /ee/ and /ai/. The objective for the day is for the children to learn the different sounds that the digraph can represent. The session starts with a 'Quickdash' activity where children quickly revisit various grapheme flashcards, including digraphs and trigraphs, and shout out the corresponding phonemes. This activity helps to refresh their memory and increase their recognition speed.
During the teaching phase, the digraph is written prominently on the board, and children are encouraged to suggest the phonemes it might represent. To aid visual learning, images of an Eagle and Ape are displayed, and the phonemes are exemplified with the words 'key' and 'grey'. To practice, a 'Word Sort' activity is conducted where words are decoded by the children and then sorted into columns based on the correct phoneme. Some of the words used in this exercise include 'key', 'donkey', 'valley', 'hockey', 'chimney', 'obey', 'hey', 'grey', and 'they'. The application of this learning is reinforced through a 'Yes/No' activity using flashcards, where children decode phrases and display the appropriate answer, as well as a 'Mini Whiteboard Work' session where they write dictated words and sentences that include the taught phonemes and digraph.
