English Resource Description
In Week 9, Day 1 of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 2, children are invited to participate in a Word Sort activity designed to be completed in pairs. This educational exercise aims to enhance their decoding skills and understanding of the digraph, which represents different sounds in various words. Students are provided with a list of words including 'seat', 'treat', 'steam', 'deaf', and 'head'. Working collaboratively, they must sound out each word and identify the specific phoneme or pictophone associated with the digraph within each word.
Once the pairs have successfully decoded the words, their next task is to visually connect the words to their corresponding sounds. They do this by drawing a line from each word to the correct representation of the sound. This kinesthetic component of the activity helps to solidify the relationship between the written digraph and its phonetic output, reinforcing the learning objective. By engaging in this interactive task, children deepen their phonetic knowledge and enhance their reading fluency through practical application and peer collaboration.
