Week 8, lesson 3 Review Day: "a,c,ch" - Phonics Phase 5, unit 2 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the third lesson of Week 8, the focus is on consolidating the understanding of the phonemes 'a', 'c', and 'ch' as part of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 2. The lesson begins with a 'Countdown Refresher' where children decode and blend words, with varying levels of difficulty to cater to different abilities within the group. The teacher sets a timer for 2-5 minutes, depending on group size, to add an element of fun and pace to the activity. The lesson plan introduces a new worksheet activity involving anagrams, where children are encouraged to cross off graphemes from a bank as they use them to form words, enhancing their recognition and spelling skills.
The main objective of the review day is to revisit the graphemes learned in the current and previous week. The 'Tricky Word Race' is an engaging activity where children read flashcards of challenging words, first individually and then as a team competition to foster a collaborative learning environment. During the 'Teach' phase, the teacher writes the day's graphemes on the board and uses pictophones to visually link each grapheme to its corresponding phoneme. Children actively participate by drawing lines between graphemes and phonemes and vocalising the sounds rather than the pictophone names. For the 'Practise' activity, a timed 'Countdown' game has children decoding and blending words from a list, either by choice or at random, earning points for each correct reading. The session concludes with the 'Apply' phase, where children engage in 'Spot the Fake', distinguishing between real and nonsense words, which they then sort into a treasure chest or a bin, reinforcing their phonemic awareness and decoding skills.
