Week 7, lesson 5 High Frequency Words (the,and,to,said,eye) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 2 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of Week 7, part of the Phase 5 Unit 2 phonics curriculum, the objective is to review a set of high frequency words (HFW): the, and, to, said, eye. The lesson begins with an introduction to these words, ensuring the children are aware that the day's focus will be on these commonly used terms. The teaching strategy involves a series of interactive activities designed to reinforce the children's understanding and recall of these words.
The lesson starts with a 'Word Breaker' activity, where the teacher selects one of the HFW, pronounces it aloud, and invites the children to break it down into its individual phonemes before saying the whole word together again. This is repeated with a few more words to ensure engagement and consolidation of learning. The 'Teach' phase involves writing the words on the board, decoding them with the help of the children, crafting sentences to demonstrate their usage, and calling on pairs of children to actively participate in recalling the words. To practice, a 'High Frequency Word Jump' game is played, where children must jump up when they see the word they are looking out for among shuffled flashcards. The lesson concludes with an 'Apply' activity, where children write the words on mini whiteboards upon dictation and, if time allows, write phrases that include these words.
