Week 7, lesson 2 Word Sort - Pairs activity - Worksheet
English Resource Description
In Week 7, Day 2 of the phonics programme, students are encouraged to work collaboratively in a 'Word Sort' pairs activity. The objective of this task is to enhance their decoding skills and phonemic awareness, particularly focusing on the grapheme and its various phonetic representations. Pupils are provided with a worksheet where they will find a list of words such as 'plan', 'apron', 'ball', 'fall', and 'that'. Their task is to carefully sound out and decode each word, identifying the specific sound that the grapheme makes in each instance.
Once the students have decoded the words, they are then instructed to visually connect the word to its corresponding phoneme or pictophone, which represents the sound of the grapheme. This activity not only reinforces the students' understanding of grapheme-phoneme correspondences but also promotes teamwork and cooperative learning as they work in pairs. The exercise is designed to be engaging and interactive, helping children to solidify their grasp of the diverse sounds that a single grapheme can represent in different words within the English language.
