In the fifth week of the phonics programme, the fifth day's lesson is dedicated to revisiting and consolidating the understanding of tricky words introduced in Unit 1. The objective for this lesson is clear: to review tricky words such as 'Mr', 'Mrs', 'Ms', 'their', 'there', 'people', 'oh', 'looked', 'asked', 'called', 'could', 'should', and 'would'. These words, which do not always follow standard phonetic rules, are the focus of the day's activities, aimed at reinforcing the children's ability to recognise and use them correctly.

The lesson plan includes a variety of engaging activities to help children practice these tricky words. It starts with the 'Word Breaker' activity where a word is spoken aloud and the class is asked to break it down into its phonetic components before saying it together again. This is followed by the 'Tricky Word Race', a competitive team game where children race to read the words quickly and accurately. The 'Tricky Word Treasure Hunt' is an interactive activity where children search for flashcards hidden around the classroom, identifying and recording the real words while disregarding any nonsensical ones. To apply their learning, children then use mini whiteboards to practice writing a selection of the tricky words, solidifying their grasp on how to spell and use these words in their writing.
