English Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of Week 1 for Phase 5 Phonics, the objective is to introduce the new grapheme , which represents the /igh/ phoneme. The lesson begins by asking students to identify which pictophone corresponds to the /igh/ sound, with the Ice Cream pictophone being the focus. Once identified, the Ice Cream image is displayed on the board as a visual aid. To revisit previous learning, a 'Quickdash' activity is conducted where children rapidly identify phonemes from a selection of grapheme/pictophone flashcards, aiming to increase their speed and fluency.
The teaching segment of the lesson reminds students that some phonemes can be spelled differently, using the example of /igh/ which has been previously learned. The teacher writes the grapheme on the board beneath the Ice Cream pictophone, then introduces the new grapheme, encouraging the class to practice saying the phoneme. During the practice phase, the 'Missing Letter' game is played where words are written on the board with a letter missing, and children are tasked with selecting the correct letter to complete the word. This is followed by the 'Apply' phase, where children use YES/NO flashcards to decode phrases and then display the correct answer. Additionally, mini whiteboard work is incorporated, with children writing dictated words or sentences that include the new grapheme, further reinforcing their understanding of the representation of the /igh/ sound.
