English Resource Description
The second day of Week 1 in Phonics Phase 5, Unit 1, introduces the new grapheme to the class. The objective is to familiarise the children with this grapheme which represents the /ow/ phoneme. The lesson begins by showing various pictophones and inviting the children to select the one that represents the /ow/ sound, which is the Owl. Once identified, the Owl pictophone is placed on the board as a visual cue for the students.
The lesson continues with a Quickwrite activity, where children are prompted to write down the grapheme corresponding to phonemes said aloud, using their whiteboards to display their answers. The teacher then reminds the class that some phonemes can be spelled differently and discusses the previously learned spelling , which is written under the Owl pictophone. The new grapheme is introduced, and students practice pronouncing the phoneme, noting that is infrequently found at the end of words, unlike "how" and "loud". The practice section involves a Word Sort activity, where children differentiate between words containing the Owl and Ox phonemes, assisting in spelling them correctly. Examples include "out", "shout", and "found". To apply their learning, children engage in a Phrase Draw task, decoding and illustrating words like "cloud" and "shout" on their whiteboards. The lesson concludes with Mini Whiteboard Work, where children write dictated words or sentences, such as "That brown cow is loud", incorporating words like "proud", "sound", and "mouth".
