Phonics Phase 4 Assessment sheet - Resource
English Resource Description
The Phonics Phase 4 Assessment sheet is a resource designed to evaluate a child's proficiency in phonics, specifically focusing on their ability to sound out and blend phonemes, segment words, read tricky words, pronounce nonsense words, and their eye tracking abilities. During the 'Sounding Out and Blending' section, children are asked to articulate each phoneme in a given word and then blend them to say the word. For example, with the word 'help', they would sound out /h/ /e/ /l/ /p/ before saying "help". The teacher marks 'yes' or 'no' for both the sounding out and blending parts, offering help if necessary but marking 'no' if assistance is given, and the activity is limited to 60 seconds.
In the 'Segmenting' part of the assessment, the learner is instructed to break down words into individual phonemes, such as /f/ /l/ /i/ /p/ for the word 'flip'. A 'yes' is awarded if each phoneme is correctly identified. The 'Tricky Words' section challenges the child to read words that do not follow regular phonetic patterns, while the 'Nonsense Words' part tests their ability to decode unfamiliar words. Finally, the 'Eye Tracking' section assesses whether the child can comfortably read text of different sizes, with a ten-day exercise routine suggested if they struggle with smaller text. This comprehensive assessment tool is used by teachers to gauge a pupil's phonics abilities and to identify areas that may need further development.
