Week 1, lesson 1 CVCC Words - Phonics Phase 4 - Lesson plan

The first lesson of Week 1 in the Phonics Phase 4 series introduces students to CVCC words, which are words that start with a consonant, have a vowel in the middle, and end with two consonants. The objective is to teach children how to read these new types of words. The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash' activity, where students quickly review and shout out the phonemes associated with previously learned graphemes and pictophones, such as saying "sss" for the grapheme and a Seal pictophone.

During the 'Teach' portion of the lesson, the teacher demonstrates how to read CVCC words by drawing four boxes on the whiteboard and filling them with the graphemes , then sound-talking and blending them. After adding the final consonant to form words like "tent," children are encouraged to join in and practice with additional words. In the 'Practise' activity, pairs of children match word flashcards with corresponding object flashcards on the board, decoding and blending words such as "bend" and "tusk." The 'Apply' stage involves using phoneme frames on the board and mini whiteboards, where children sound-talk the words and write the graphemes in the frames.
