Week 10, lesson 4 Blending Words - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The Week 10, Day 4 lesson in the All Aboard Phonics Phase 3 series is dedicated to enhancing students' blending skills for reading words. The objective of this lesson is straightforward: to practice blending sounds together to form and read words. The lesson begins with a revisitation of the alphabet through the familiar melody of the alphabet song, encouraging students to point to each letter as they sing. This is followed by the 'Word Breaker' activity, where the teacher vocalises a word and the class collaboratively breaks it down into its constituent sounds before reassembling it and saying the complete word in unison. This exercise is repeated with several words to reinforce the concept.
During the 'Teach' phase, the teacher writes a sentence on the board and demonstrates reading it aloud. A word is then erased and replaced with another, prompting the children to decide if the new sentence still makes sense. This activity, called 'Sentence Sub', involves children raising their hands to give their verdict and volunteers reading the altered sentence. For example, the sentence "He sat down on the chair" might be changed by substituting "sat" with "fell", "chair" with "soil", and "down" with "up". In the 'Practise' section, the 'Spot the Fake' game engages children in distinguishing between real and nonsensical words, sorting them into a treasure chest or bin respectively. The 'Apply' stage uses 'Yes/No' cards, where children decode phrases and display the correct card in response to questions like "Can a hammer hit a nail?" Finally, the lesson includes extension activities such as 'Sound Scramble' to further consolidate students' phonics knowledge.
