Week 9, lesson 4 Revising Digraphs - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The lesson plan for Week 9, Day 4, within the All Aboard Phonics programme, is designed to help children practise and reinforce their understanding of blending sounds to read words, with a particular focus on revising digraphs. The objective of the lesson is clear: students will engage in exercises to enhance their ability to blend phonemes for reading. The lesson begins with a familiar and fun Alphabet Song, where children sing along while pointing to the corresponding letters, warming up their phonetic awareness.
Following the warm-up, the 'Word Breaker' activity allows students to break down words into individual sounds and then reconstruct them, reinforcing their phonemic understanding. The 'Teach' segment of the lesson introduces a 'Grapheme Sort' where four specific digraphs are written on the whiteboard. Students participate by matching object cards, which contain names with these digraphs, to the correct category on the board, thus linking the sounds (phonemes) to the letter combinations (graphemes). In the 'Practise' phase, children work in pairs in 'Sound-A-Word Teams' to sound out words from provided cards or a board list, encouraging cooperative learning. Finally, the 'Apply' stage tests comprehension through a 'Yes/No' game where children decode phrases and use YES or NO cards to respond to questions, actively applying their knowledge. For those ready for more challenge, 'Extension Activities' such as 'Sound Scramble' are available to further develop their phonics skills.
