Week 8, lesson 5 Writing Sentences - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of Week 8, students will enhance their literacy skills by focusing on writing sentences. The objective of the day is clear: "Today we will practise writing words in sentences." The lesson starts with a dynamic 'Quickdash Tricky Words' activity, where children quickly revise the tricky words they have learned by identifying them on flashcards. The pace increases as the activity progresses, encouraging the children to recognise the words promptly and shout them out as they appear.
Following the warm-up, the 'Write The Picture' exercise takes centre stage. The class is shown an image that depicts a particular phrase. Together, they discuss what the picture represents before the teacher reveals the phrase associated with it, such as "She is going for a surf." The children are then tasked with writing this phrase on their whiteboards. In the practise phase, the children work in pairs to interpret a new image and come up with their own phrases to write down, using "the torch is bright" as a guide if needed. The lesson concludes with 'Mini Whiteboard Work', where a phrase is dictated to the children for them to write, and extension activities like 'Sound Splat' and 'Sound Sorter' to review Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences (GPCs).
