Week 7, lesson 5 Reading sentences - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of Week 7, part of the Phase 3 Phonics programme, the children will continue to enhance their skills in reading sentences, an area where they have already shown improvement. The objective of the lesson is to practice this skill, with the teacher encouraging the students by acknowledging their progress. The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash Tricky Words' activity, where children quickly revise the tricky words they have learned by shouting them out as they are displayed on flashcards. The pace increases as they become more confident, adding an element of fun and challenge to the activity.
During the 'Teach/Practise' portion of the lesson, the teacher writes a sentence on the board and reads it aloud, demonstrating the process of reading. Then, the teacher changes one word in the sentence for another and engages the children to determine if the new sentence still makes sense. Students are encouraged to participate by raising their hands and volunteering to read the modified sentences. Examples include altering "Cath fed the cat" to "Cath hid the moon" and "The dogs might lick you" to "The dogs might kick Mark." The 'Apply' phase involves a 'Phrase Draw' activity, where children decode a written phrase, such as "The owl in the air," and then illustrate it on their whiteboards to share with the class. For those ready for more, extension activities include 'Phrase Act' and 'Phoneme Frame', offering additional opportunities to apply their phonics knowledge in creative ways.
