Week 6, lesson 3 Tricky words (you) - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the third lesson of Week 6, the focus is on the tricky word "you" as part of the Phonics Phase 3 curriculum. The objective of the lesson is clear: to familiarise the children with the word "you," which does not follow the usual phonetic rules. The lesson begins with a quick revision activity where children are prompted to write down the grapheme for each phoneme they hear and display their answers on whiteboards. This quickwrite exercise helps to refresh their memory on phonemes covered in previous lessons.
The teaching segment introduces the new tricky word "you" using sound buttons and bars to help the children sound-talk it, while noting the unusual sound representation within the word. During the practice phase, a Tricky Word Race is conducted using flashcards of all the tricky words learned so far, including "the", "to", "and", and others, culminating in the new word "you". This activity not only reinforces the words but also adds a competitive element to the learning. In the application stage of the lesson, children engage in a Caption Match activity where they read phrases written on the board and match them to corresponding images, with phrases such as "She can see you" and "Did you burp?" To further enhance their learning, extension activities involving magnetic letters and printing are suggested, offering varied and interactive ways to consolidate their understanding of the tricky word "you".
