Week 2, Guided Reading "A Map"" - Phase 2 - Worksheet
English Resource Description
The "A Map" worksheet is part of a guided reading session aimed at developing comprehension and phonics skills. In this activity, students are encouraged to engage with the text through a series of comprehension questions that prompt them to explore the title and cover of the book, speculate about the story's content, and consider the characters' feelings and actions. For example, they are asked to identify the title and its location, infer details from the book's cover, predict the plot, and empathise with the character Pam's emotions upon discovering a map.
To extend learning beyond comprehension, bonus questions invite the children to use their imaginations, contemplating what they would do if they found a treasure map or a large sum of money. For the practical component, activities include grapheme practice, which can be done creatively in sand or with a paintbrush, and a worksheet that challenges students to create their own treasure map and decode a phrase. Additionally, quiet reading time allows for individual reflection, while a collaborative task to create a map of the school encourages teamwork and application of their newfound knowledge. Teaching notes emphasise the importance of understanding book titles and encourage educators to clarify that titles can be found on the front cover of every book.
