Week 1, lesson 5 Review day - Phonics Phase 2 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The fifth day of Week 1 in the Phonics Phase 2 lesson plan is dedicated to reviewing and consolidating the learning of the week. The session begins with a dynamic 'Quickdash' activity, where children are shown grapheme/pictophone flashcards at a progressively increasing pace. They are encouraged to shout out the phoneme associated with each grapheme, as well as the name of the pictophones, such as "Seal with a Wheel". This is followed by a review of the four graphemes learned over the week, where students practise letter formation either by air-writing or tracing on a peer's back.
The teaching segment introduces a new concept about the letter , highlighting its ability to represent different sounds. The usual /s/ sound can sometimes have a buzzing quality, producing a /z/ sound instead. Children are asked to practise making this buzzing sound and then to differentiate between the /s/ and /z/ sounds in words like "sat" and "as", which are decoded together as a class. Practise is reinforced through engaging games that were introduced earlier in the week, such as Sound Pops and Sound Jump, focusing on the week's phonemes. An activity called 'Lift and Rub' is used to develop children's understanding of left and right, crucial for the natural scanning of words from left to right. The lesson concludes with practical application through mini whiteboard work, where children write the graphemes corresponding to called-out phonemes, and extension activities that may involve exploring letters in nature.
