Netball - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of a Year 5 netball series, pupils are set to broaden their netball skills by learning and practising a variety of passes. The lesson's learning objectives are for pupils to be able to perform a chest pass, a bounce pass, and an overhead pass with accuracy. To achieve these objectives, the lesson is structured with a warm-up, main activities, and a cool-down, each designed to enhance the pupils' abilities and understanding of netball. The warm-up involves mobility exercises like side bends and arm circles, and incorporates a zig-zag drill with chest passes, which can be extended by introducing bounce and overhead passes if the pupils are ready.
The main section of the lesson, lasting 30 minutes, sees pupils split into groups for structured drills. These drills focus on passing to a player moving onto the ball and returning it, with variations in speed and distance to challenge the pupils further. A competitive element is introduced with a game where groups of four attempt to keep the ball away from a defender, with points awarded for successful passes. The lesson concludes with a cool-down that includes running and gentle stretching. Pupils reflect on their performance by choosing to lie down, squat, or jump based on their self-assessment of achieving the lesson's objectives. Throughout the lesson, the emphasis remains on technique, particularly the accuracy of passes.
