Rounders - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
Year 4 students are set to bring together all the skills they've learned in a mini rounders match in Lesson 6 of their rounders unit. The learning objectives are clear: students must demonstrate effective batting and bowling, show their prowess in fielding, and work cohesively as a team. The success criteria for the lesson are for pupils to bat and bowl effectively, field effectively, and to work effectively as a team throughout the lesson. Key vocabulary includes terms such as "game," "strike," "bowling," "underarm," "rounders," and "bat." To facilitate the lesson, the necessary equipment comprises cones, tennis balls, rounders bats, and rounders posts.
The lesson kicks off with a ten-minute warm-up called Zig-Zag Catching, where pupils throw the ball in a zig-zag pattern and rush to the end of their line, aiming to be the first group to get all members past the finishing cone. The warm-up can be varied by adjusting the distance between pupils and using different catching and throwing techniques. The main part of the lesson, lasting 30 minutes, involves a Continuous Rounders game. Two teams compete, alternating between batting and fielding, with the objective of scoring runs by hitting the ball and running between bases. The game is played twice to allow for different oppositions. Key teaching points include ensuring accurate throws, ready hands, and a focus on teamwork and strategy. The lesson concludes with a cool down activity where pupils catch and throw a ball in numerical order while moving around their area. This activity is adaptable in terms of area size, throw type, and complexity. Pupils reflect on the main objectives of the lesson, the challenges they faced, and areas for improvement in their rounders skills.
