Rounders - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
In the third lesson of a Year 4 rounders series, students aim to enhance their fielding skills, with specific objectives including stopping a moving ball, throwing overarm with accuracy, and identifying areas for improvement. The session starts with a warm-up exercise called 'Keep It Moving', where the class is divided into five groups to practice ball placement, running, and underarm throwing. This activity emphasizes the importance of balance and collecting the ball from a side-on position. To further challenge the students, variations and extensions are suggested, such as using the non-dominant hand and introducing additional balls to increase the pace of the activity.
The main part of the lesson spans 30 minutes, featuring two key activities: 'Target Throwing' and 'Throwing Rounders'. In 'Target Throwing', students remain in their warm-up groups and take turns throwing a ball through a hoop held by a classmate, with another acting as a backstop. The exercise is designed to fine-tune overarm throwing and catching skills. 'Throwing Rounders' involves setting up two rounders pitches and dividing the class into teams of runners and fielders. The teams compete to throw the ball far and complete a rounder, while the fielders work together to catch the ball. The session concludes with a cool-down, where students pair up to practice picking up a moving ball and returning it with an overarm throw. Throughout the lesson, pupil discussions encourage reflection on technique and strategies for successful fielding and throwing.
